Fashion designs by Ariel Gold

Just wrapped up shooting 11 outfits in my studio designed by UW-Madison textile & apparel design student Ariel Gold. She is creating her 11x14" portfolio to apply to Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. I was extremely impressed by how talented Ariel is for a young designer and can't wait to see more of her work! Model: Hillary Williams.

Photoshop eBooks by Gry Garness (review)

I've recently purchased the fantastic Photoshop eBooks by Gry Garness. These are the first eBooks I've ever bought and the format is pretty slick. The books are password protected so you'll need to enter a password each time you open the file-a slight inconvenience but not a huge deal. I've found the book is not searchable with (Apple) Preview 5.0 which is very unfortunate since I may be using that as my primary .pdf reader under Snow Leopard. The text is searchable using Acrobat and the feature comes in handy since this is a reference book with specialized information you'll want to access from time-to-time.

I ordered the bundle of books which includes: Digital Retouching for Fashion, Beauty & Portrait Photography, Essential Color Optimization, and Essential Color Management. The retouching book is by far the most useful to me by providing a wealth of trade secrets that are used in the fashion industry. There is quite a bit of overlap between the three eBooks particularly in the area of color management. Nevertheless, there is a discount for picking up all three and the extensive information is very worthwhile, particularly with color critical imaging work such as magazines, product photography, and advertising photography. Garness suggests a very specific, practical workflow which keeps photo file data as clean (and editable) as possible throughout the process-from capture to output.

I'm not going to get too in-depth about what the eBooks cover, but I do highly recommend the books for professional photographers who want the very best reference information for high-end retouching and color management. Personally, I find color profiles and management are the most difficult skills in photography and graphic design to grasp and these books concisely cover the latest advanced principles. What is this?
The Madison Fashion Meet-up is a free networking event at the Sundance 608 Rooftop Bar. The venue is open to all ages; parking is free and plentiful. This is a chance for you to meet industry professionals of all experience levels and backgrounds. It’s a casual, informal networking opportunity to discuss projects and mingle with models, photographers, stylists, publicists, designers, retailers, anybody who has an “in” in the Madison fashion industry.

What do I bring?
Bring a print portfolio, composite or business cards, or a laptop if you want to show off your latest work. Dress fashionable and remember this is a business of first impressions! Have fun but be professional!

(Milwaukee, Wisconsin, April 11, 2009)- Mind Over Matter Inc. presents The 3rd Annual Fashion Revolution 2009 to benefit The Fashion Revolution Scholarship fund of Milwaukee of which is available for students in art and fashion related degree programs. This is a runway fashion production showcasing a total of ten Milwaukee and Chicago clothing and accessory designers. Saturday April 11, 2009 at the Milwaukee Art Museum Baumgartner Gallerias, 700 N Art Museum Dr., Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202. Show time starts at 8:00pm. Opening dance performance by local professionals, REMIX, and musical performance by Firey Phoenix. DJ Kid Cut Up will be disc jockey for the night. Live video feed sponsored by Omanaman.The cost of tickets range from $30 to $50 vip packages.

"The Fashion Revolution is one of the main forces stimulating the fashion scene in Milwaukee", says Sheena Luckett-Dodd, the producer of the show. The Fashion Revolution celebrates it's third year rendering appreciation for the indie fashion market, artists, independent designers and models. Each production is tailored in it's own way to allow the featured designers a great opportunity to be exposed and celebrated. The 2009 production will take place in the Baumgartner Gallerias of the Milwaukee Art Museum; a large, spacious gallery adorned with striking white arches and a panoramic view of Lake Michigan.

The Fashion Revolution 2009 will focus on avant-garde fashions and ready-to-wear inspired by cultural influences around the world. Some countries being represented are Russia, Great Britain, India, and Egypt. Designers were encouraged to design true to their own style yet infuse the history and culture of a region they chose for inspiration. Sheena Luckett-Dodd, founder of Mind Over Matter Inc., and her team of coordinators organized The Fashion Revolution 2009 to expose not only the hard work and determination of the designers as they provide their creations for public consumption, but to also demonstrate how fashion is interpreted globally through different cultures and mediums. The introduction of the 2009 Fashion Revolution scholarship was based on the needs of students pursuing art and fashion related degrees as well as to serve as a support system for Milwaukee's emerging fashion community.

The 2009 revolutionary designs are created by returning designers Anna Hovet of Chicago and The How High Collection, and new designers Ends-Wealth Designs of Chicago, VGal Designs, Tia Richardson, Nandi, GG Collections, Sazzy Crochet Designs, Steffsko, and Lauren Reynolds.

The evening events includes the actual runway show, live performances, complimentary fashion totes and the limited edition Fashion Revolution magazine while supplies last. Fashion shoot with Hanna

I was in Milwaukee over the weekend and worked with a great emerging model named Hanna. She did fantastic and I hope she visits my studio for another photo shoot soon.

KJ and I did a shoot at my studio Friday. My friend Ken Udell assisted me. I'm pretty happy with the lighting and look on these.

I've reworked this shot (in post-production) several times to get the color balance and sharpness right. It might not sound hard, but this was snapped at 640 ISO which is less than ideal. Here's my latest version. 50mm lens, one bounced Lowel Tota + available light.

Here's a photo I snapped last summer for the model's fashion portfolio. I used a portable strobe, battery pack and softbox to accent the natural outdoor light (we were shooting in shadow). I really like this shot of my friend Sarah. I'm not overly keen on shooting in the studio, but once in a while I don't mind setting up a paper or muslin backdrop. Canon 5D body, 85mm prime lens.

Mandie

Here's a product shoot Mandie and I worked on back in 2005. Basically, my assignment was to photograph the entire collection of merchandise The Onion had at the time. It was a challenge, but the ad campaign turned out very well. Mandie is now represented by Ford Models in Chicago and can be booked though their agency.
