New cover featuring a band photo of The Choons

I recently photographed a band called The Choons on State Street in front of The Pub where they will be playing on March 12. The shoot went really well, although we had a ton of gear (lighting and musical instruments) and State Street was super crowded. About 10 strangers came up and wanted to know what we were up to and basically just wanted to chat. I hired my friend Bao Lammikins to assist and that really helped me out. Once the gear was on location, he stayed in the Pub to make sure the light (and power cord) I had stationed inside to backlight the scene did not accidentally get kicked over. Isthmus cover: Sgt. Mike Koval

I've got the cover shot in the Dec. 11 Isthmus of Sgt. Mike Koval of the Madison Police Dept. We took the photo at night on West Washington Ave. so that we could get a striking editorial portrait with downtown lights as the backdrop. It's always a challenge matching your ambient light to the key light, and in this case it was quite a bit more difficult since it was quite dark out. Nevertheless, we get some great photos and I was really happy how the cover turned out. Art Director: Carolyn Fath.

New portrait in Isthmus newspaper

Had a fun shoot with David Furumoto, the head of the UW-Madison's University Theatre. The shot and an accompanying article is in the November 12 edition of Isthmus.

Cardinal Bar photos in the Isthmus this week

I was commissioned to photograph some interiors of the renovated Cardinal Bar as well as some editorial portraits of the new owner Ricardo Gonzales for Isthmus this week. The shoot went well and I've known Ricardo for years now. I actually used to DJ at his Madison nightclub in 2003. Good times!

New portrait photo

Last week I photographed Heidi for the cover of Isthmus newspaper. We met up at University Hospital in Madison and did the portraits there. For the cover image I dragged the shutter to backlight the photograph in order to create the mood of the image.

Last week, I photographed Matt Rothschild, the editor of The Progressive magazine which is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this weekend. The shoot went smoothly and the weather cooperated which is always an added bonus. Isthmus Dining Guide 2009 front cover

I enjoy photographing food (and evidently I'm decent at it). It's a challenge doing something new with it each time and quite frankly any assignment with vivid colors and an extremely shallow depth of field appeals to me. There are a far fewer x-factors to hinder a food shoot. Restaurants are generally very accommodating, you don't have weather to contend with, lighting gear is fairly minimal, and once you've developed a system your equipment checklist won't change that much from year to year.
