Top ten free Mac apps

These are programs I use almost every day on my Macintosh computers. All are free and well worth looking into if you are a Mac user!

1) Weatherdock is a fantastic freeware that gives you subtle yet powerful weather updates on your Mac over your internet connection. It uses the Weather Channel's weather data to keep you in the loop. Highly recommended.

2) Neooffice is a great, free alternative to MS Office. Includes word processor, spreadsheet, drawing, database, and presentation suite. NeoOffice can edit, import and exchange files with other popular office applications.

3) Linotype FontExplorer X 1.2.3 unfortunately, Linotype no longer provides support for the free version. However, it is still available (for now) and supports up to Adobe Creative Suite 3.

4) RBrowser in its unlicensed mode is a free FTP client application. It's very stable on my machines and I recommend it.

5) Galerie creates photo gallery web pages. Free stylesheet templates are downloadable as well, so you can custom the look of your web gallery.

6) Handbrake is used to convert DVDs into iTunes and other digital formats.

7) Audacity a basic sound editor for editing and recording on Windows, Mac, or Linux.

8) Firefox (with StumbleUpon and AdBlock Plus add-ons): StumbleUpon is an quick and easy way to send and receive random web pages to friends. Clicking the "Stumble!" button also brings you to some neat, random sites with similar interests. AdBlock Plus stops web ad servers from embedding banner ads on webpages.

9) VLC Media Player multimedia player able to play most audio and video formats as well as DVDs, Audio CDs VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

10) Onyx Having to troubleshoot system problems sucks. Generally, the first steps I take to fix my OS when it appears to have issues are as follows: first run Disk Utility > First Aid > Repair Disk Permissions AND Repair Disk scripts from the OS install CD. Finally, I run the maintenance and cleaning scripts built in to OnyX. Always make sure you have the latest version of OnyX for reliability.
